Here’s why Toronto jet setters should consider travel insurance before their next trip

Summer is here, and with the sunny season often comes an insatiable urge to travel.

Whether it's jetsetting to another continent, embarking on a family road trip across Canada, or getting yourself to a coastline ASAP, it's important to consider working travel insurance into your trip budget.

That's where TD Insurance can help.

Common misconceptions

First things first, it's helpful to understand the value of travel insurance. Many Canadians believe they already have enough insurance coverage through sources like provincial healthcare, their credit cards, or employer coverage.

While these options may offer some coverage, it can vary depending on the plan, provider, trip type, destination, and individual circumstances. Before you travel, it's important to check your existing coverage, know where there may be gaps, and consider topping up or extending if you require additional coverage.

Budgeting for travel insurance

Nearly half of Canadian travellers polled are opting to skip insurance entirely, with many believing they will not need it or in an attempt to save money. But disruptions like a trip cancellation or interruption, or unexpected medical emergency, can quickly become costly.

TD survey findings show that 29 per cent of uninsured travellers cannot cover substantial emergency costs. More specifically, 15 per cent could cover up to $300, and 14 per cent could not cover any unexpected travel costs without adequate insurance coverage.

And those unexpected costs can add up fast — with trip cancellations and inpatient hospital stays often costing thousands.

As for the cost of travel insurance, premiums can start as low as $30, depending on factors such as your age, destination and trip length. For travellers exploring Canada, TD Insurance recently introduced a domestic travel discount that can help travellers save up to 25 per cent if travelling within Canada.

Travel with confidence this summer

You can't control delayed flights, lost luggage, trip cancellations, or medical emergencies. What you can control is your preparedness.

About the TD Survey

This TD survey, conducted using the Leger Opinion panel, ran from April 17-27, 2026, with a nationally representative sample of 1,500 Canadian adults. The results have been weighted by age, gender, and region (and in Quebec, language) to match the population, according to Census data. For comparison purposes, a probability sample of 1,500 has an estimated margin of error (which measures sampling variability) of ±2.5%, 19 times out of 20.
