If you've ever wondered what it would be like to spend the night in a historic schoolhouse, there's a bed and breakfast in the Ontario town of Niagara-on-the-Lake that offers exactly that experience.
School House Bed and Breakfast is set within a heritage building dating all the way back to 1859. Long before it welcomed overnight guests, the space served as Niagara-on-the-Lake's first public school, built during a time when the community was still developing in the decades following the War of 1812.
Today, the former schoolhouse is a landmark in its own right, transformed into a charming boutique inn with six guest suites. Many of the building's original architectural features remain intact, paying homage to its past life.
The school was initially converted into an apartment building, but that eventually fell into disrepair. A major restoration project in the early 2000s gave the structure a new lease on life and also uncovered original features that had been hidden for decades.
Reportedly, the renovations revealed old classroom blackboards, original tin ceilings, and maple flooring, all still fairly intact. Many of those details were then restored and incorporated into the inn's infrastructure.
The property now features a collection of suites, some of which offer loft-style layouts spread across two levels, plus private bathrooms, sitting areas, and a range of modern amenities.

Although home to just six suites, the property spoils guests with options. Those hoping to soak in the inn's schoolhouse roots can book The Housemaster's Loft, The Secretary's Suite, or the Librarian's Loft, each featuring soaring ceilings and fireplaces.

These lofts can accommodate up to two guests each, with an additional $50 fee for a third occupant.

Guests seeking a more traditional stay — simply a bed and bathroom, with no historical frill — can opt for the Professor's Suite.
And, as expected from a bed and breakfast, a complimentary continental early morning meal is included with every booking.

The inn's location is another major draw. Situated in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake, often described as "one of the prettiest towns in Ontario," the property is just a short drive from Niagara Falls.
In about 25 minutes, visitors can reach Ontario's most popular tourist attraction to take in the iconic falls and explore Clifton Hill, home to activities like the Mario Kart racetrack and the province's only Burger King restaurant with a built-in roller coaster.
For those who prefer to stay within walking distance, there is a plethora of attractions nearby.
Theatre lovers can catch a performance at Shaw Festival Theatre, while nature enthusiasts can grab a coffee and stroll through Queen's Royal Park for picturesque views of Lake Ontario.
A stay at School House Bed and Breakfast offers visitors the chance to explore the region by day before retreating to a quieter, more intimate setting in the evening. Rooms start at $245 per night and can be reserved directly through the inn's official website.
School House Bed and Breakfast is located at 40 Platoff St. in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.
