Scenic train ride through Ontario fall colours crosses above a huge dam

With fall colours in Ontario soon at their peak, the Agawa Canyon Tour Train in Sault Ste. Marie is one of the more unique ways to experience a mesmerizing view of all the seasonal autumn hues.

Hailed as "one of the most popular train tours in North America," this experience lets visitors hop on board a scenic 10-hour excursion through Northern Ontario; a full day-trip to soak in the beauty of all the fall colours that transform the province every year.

The tour starts at the train depot and takes riders on an approximately 183-kilometre-long journey, where they can bear witness to the unique foliage and picturesque landscapes synonymous with this region.

Along the way, you'll see natural landscapes as well as human-made landmarks like the scenic MacKay Dam at Montreal Falls. A large trestle built right into the dam just may be the highlight of this journey.

The locomotive takes four hours to arrive at Agawa Park, where there is a 90–minute stop for visitors to explore the area, have a picnic lunch, and of course, take photos. It's a coveted spot to enjoy fall scenery, made all the more exclusive by the fact that it is only accessible via train.

And, if you're feeling adventurous, you can always take a hike on the Lookout Trail, which will take you to a peak overlooking breathtaking scenery.

After the one-and-a-half-hour pit stop at the park, riders start their journey back to the train depot, where the trip concludes.

Set against the backdrop of fiery leaves, the Agawa Canyon Tour Train ensures that you catch sight of the Canadian Shield's unique geology, its vast forests, and the scenic northern rivers and lakes of the province's hinterland.

And with no Wi-Fi and limited cellphone coverage aboard, you're bound to be immersed in all the beauty around you rather than buried in your phone.

You can book your very own nature escape with the Agawa Canyon Tour Train right now. The peak leaf peeping season is September 15 to October 14, and tickets are available on the tour's official website. Adult tickets are $150, plus applicable taxes, and this price does not include food aboard.

Although no outside food is allowed on the train, the attraction offers an in-train food experience for you to enjoy.

Each trip starts at 8 a.m. sharp and returns to the train depot at 5:30 p.m.

The Agawa Canyon Tour Train is located at 87 Huron St, Sault Ste. Marie, in Ont.
