American busted with $300K of pot after wrong turn at U.S. border with Ontario

A GPS error sent a man toward the U.S.-Canada border, where he was arrested after authorities discovered boxes of marijuana in his vehicle.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) states that 43-year-old U.S. citizen Ronald Nunn is facing felony drug charges after authorities searched his rental truck following a wrong turn at the U.S.-Canada border. A CBP post on X reveals that Nunn is from California.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 15, in Buffalo, New York, when Nunn was driving while following directions on his phone. He alleged that, unbeknownst to him, the directions were leading him to Canada.

He made the wrong turn onto the Peace Bridge at the U.S.-Canada border, then headed back to the U.S. At the border, he allegedly told a CBP officer that his truck was empty.

"However, upon further inspection by the CBP officers, several boxes were discovered in the back of the truck, contradicting the man's claim," reads the release. "The rental truck and Nunn were escorted to a secondary inspection area for further examination."

It was during the secondary inspection of the truck that CBP officers discovered three cardboard boxes containing 60 vacuum-sealed packages weighing a total of approximately 78 pounds. Officers checked the contents, which tested positive for "the properties of marijuana." CBP estimates that the packages of marijuana had a total street value of approximately US$230,000 (C$312,082).

The illegal marijuana and the driver were turned over to the Buffalo Police Department. Nunn faces a class D felony charge for criminal possession of cannabis. According to The New York State Senate, a class D felony "must be at least four years and must not exceed seven years."

"Our dedicated CBP officers continue to perform their jobs at the highest levels," said Area Port Director Gaetano Cordone. "Their training and experience help to keep our communities safe from these illegal narcotics."

In April, the CBP detained a woman in Michigan after she made a wrong turn toward Canada while searching for a Costco location.
