If you're looking to plan out your dream European vacation, there's some news that could make your journey out from Toronto just a bit easier, especially if Spain is on your list.
Iberia, the Spanish national airline, has announced plans to launch a new nonstop flight service connecting Toronto Pearson Airport to Madrid.
While specific launch dates haven't been confirmed just yet, Iberia included Toronto in a major expansion plan unveiled earlier this month. The strategic plan, called Flight Plan 2030, was announced on June. 18, 2025 and outlines a €6 billion investment aimed at transforming the airline's long-haul capabilities.
Madrid–Barajas Airport, Iberia's home base, is already a major hub for travel in and out of Europe. The new service would offer travellers out of Toronto another direct option to Spain, as the only other nonstop flight service between the two cities is operated by Air Canada.
Known for its internationally renowned culinary scene, Madrid is home to dozens of Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as some of Europe's most visited museums, such as the Prado and Reina Sofía.
For now, heading to the Spanish capital means either booking with Air Canada or relying on one-stop flights offered by carriers like TAP Air Portugal, Lufthansa, British Airways, and United, usually with layovers in cities like Lisbon, Frankfurt, London, or U.S. hubs.
Iberia's upcoming route is part of a transatlantic expansion that also includes new direct connections to Monterrey, Mexico, and Philadelphia.
