Canada issues urgent travel advisory for Mexico suggesting 'high degree of caution'

The Government of Canada has issued a travel advisory for Mexico, urging caution for travellers heading south.

On June 18, Canada updated its travel advisory for Mexico, warning Canadians of the risk level, which remains at yellow. Travellers are being warned of the dangers of Hurricane Erick, a rapidly intensifying tropical storm. Canadians are also urged to avoid non-essential travel to the southwestern coast from Bahías de Huatulco to Tecpan de Galeana.

"Hurricane Erick is expected to make landfall as a hurricane between Bahías de Huatulco and Tecpan de Galeana on June 19, 2025," reads the statement. "The storm is likely to bring excessive rainfall and violent winds."

The Canadian government warns that flash flooding and landslides could disrupt essential services, including transportation, power distribution, water and food supply, telecommunications networks, emergency services, and medical care.

"If you are in the affected area of southern Mexico: exercise caution, monitor local news and weather reports, and follow the instructions of local authorities," reads the advisory.

Updates can be found on the U.S. National Hurricane Centre's (NHC) website.

According to a recent NHC bulletin, the hurricane is expected to "bring damaging winds and life-threatening flash floods" to southern parts of Mexico from Wednesday night all the way until Thursday.

The storm is expected to bring a maximum of 20 inches of rainfall and winds reaching up to 140 km/h. The bulletin also warns of life-threatening flooding, mudslides, dangerous storm surges, and dangerous surf and rip current conditions.

The impending storm has prompted the Mexican government to issue tropical storm warnings in various regions.
