Could the Toronto Maple Leafs enter the Nikita Kucherov sweepstakes?
Shockwaves were sent across the NHL on Friday after reports broke that Kucherov had requested a trade away from the Tampa Bay Lightning. It immediately sparked conversation on potential trade destinations, and it sounds like the Maple Leafs could be a possibility.
The 33-year-old Russian superstar is set to become a UFA next summer and currently holds a 10-team trade list. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday that he does not know which teams are on that list, but that he believes Toronto could be a possibility, alongside Montreal.
"I do believe that if Tampa was going to trade him, and Montreal and Toronto could come up with a package that Tampa would like, those are two teams among many that he would consider," Friedman reported.
"The lack of pace that he felt in the [contract] negotiations is a major reason why he told his teammates and the organization that he wouldn't re-sign and wanted to be traded." @FriedgeHNIC opens Saturday Headlines with the latest on Nikita Kucherov's trade request. https://t.co/iervVYWbFN

It seems almost unthinkable that a player like Kucherov could be on the move. He is among the league's very best and is playing on a Tampa Bay team that is still contending for a Stanley Cup.
Kucherov helped the Lightning win two Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021, is the reigning NHL MVP, and has won the NHL scoring race on three separate occasions. Players like that rarely, if ever, become available on the trade market.
There is, however, a major hurdle standing in the way of a potential Kucherov trade with Toronto. The Lightning put out a statement on Friday saying that they had no interest in trading away their superstar, showing that Tampa GM Julien BriseBois will be sticking this out a little longer before pulling the trigger on a deal.
There could be some hesitance from Tampa Bay to deal a player of Kucherov's calibre within the division as well.
If Tampa Bay eventually backs off that stance, the Leafs would need to put together quite a package to land Kucherov. Players like Easton Cowan and Ben Danforth would likely be the starting point for a trade like this, with the addition of multiple first-round picks as well. If an extension is worked out between the Leafs and Kucherov, more assets would likely need to be involved.
It's bound to be a complex scenario that will continue to heat up ahead of the upcoming trade deadline this March. No matter what happens, you can expect speculation between Toronto and Kucherov to ramp up until either a trade is made or the Lightning find a way to re-sign their superstar.
