It seems like Canada's Wonderland, the country's largest amusement park located right here in Ontario, may be going through a bit of an identity crisis.
If online buzz is any indication, Six Flags is considering a name change for a handful of its theme parks, and Canada's Wonderland is among them.
Amusement Insider, a digital platform dedicated to all things thrill rides and amusement parks, shared a reel online revealing that it sent a survey to season passholders of various Six Flags parks, asking guests to vote on potential name changes for some locations.
From what we can tell, four names are being floated for Canada's Wonderland: Canada's Wonderland a Six Flags Experience, Six Flags Canada's Wonderland, Canada's Wonderland by Six Flags, and Six Flags over Toronto.
In my opinion, all of these sound like a mouthful. And if the comments section is anything to go by, die-hard Wonderland fans aren't too impressed either.
"Canada's Wonderland and nothing but!!!," someone exclaimed, while another threatened to never set foot on the property again if the name changed: "Canada's Wonderland NOT Six Flags. If you change it, I will not buy any more passes and no one will. So keep it CANADA'S WONDERLAND."
Some have even suggested dropping the Six Flags branding altogether, particularly in light of a recent tragic accident at Six Flags Over Georgia, that left two of the Ontario-based park's roller coasters grounded.
"Getting rid of the Six Flags name at every park would be their best bet at this point. The public hears the name Six Flags, and now they think of people dying."
While speculation about a potential name change continues to swirl, a Canada's Wonderland spokesperson offered some clarification.
"The survey was conducted in all markets where we have Six Flags parks, including the US and Mexico. We regularly conduct research to better understand what matters most to our guests and passholders, as their feedback is valuable in helping inform decisions about the future of our parks and company," she tells blogTO.
"The options presented were research concepts, not proposed or final names. No decision has been made regarding park names," she concludes.
Six Flags officially acquired Canada's Wonderland in 2024 following a massive merger with amusement park and resort operator Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. At the time, the company confirmed it would not implement any name changes as a result of the consolidation.
If the proposed rebranding does move forward, Canada's Wonderland could be heading for its third name.
The park originally opened as Canada's Wonderland in 1981, but changed its name after Paramount Communications Inc. acquired it in 1993, becoming Paramount Canada's Wonderland. The name was eventually reverted to Canada's Wonderland in early 2007, after Cedar Fair took ownership of the 330-acre theme park.
