Toronto Blue Jays just built the northernmost baseball field in the world

There's no question that the Toronto Blue Jays captivated the entire country with their historic World Series run last year.

The franchise has fully embraced its nickname as Canada's team and is building grassroots programs nationwide through its Jays Care Foundation.

The team's latest project might be the coolest one yet: building the world's northernmost baseball diamond in Arctic Bay, Nunavut.

The small town in northern Baffin Island was one of 16 recipients of the 2022 Jays Care Field of Dreams program, which aims to improve baseball infrastructure across Canada.

The Jays Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays, gave Arctic Bay around $50,000 to install baseball turf, benches for players and stands for spectators.

The entire project reportedly came to around $55,000, with the town covering additional costs not provided by the Jays Care Foundation. The finished pictures of the field look absolutely epic.

The field is now the world's northernmost baseball diamond. To put into perspective just how far north it is, only three other countries have land farther north than Arctic Bay: Canada, Russia, and Denmark (Greenland).

According to CBC, the rugged location presented some challenges during construction, given that Arctic Bay is far from flat. The project brought in gravel to create a level area at the base of a mountain, while four workers from a synthetic turf company travelled north to lay the turf and finish the field.

The field is more than 3,200 km from Rogers Centre to Arctic Bay, which is roughly equivalent to the distance between Toronto and the Dominican Republic.

Every year, several towns and cities across Canada apply for more than $2.5 million in TD grants to help improve baseball infrastructure in their communities. The Jays Care Foundation runs the Field of Dreams program every year, with applications opening this month.
