Kawhi Leonard trade freeze should soon thaw for Toronto Raptors

The question on every Toronto sports fan's mind right now is when the team will move forward with its paused trade and officially announce Kawhi Leonard as a Raptor.

If Monday's report from ESPN is any indication, the announcement may happen sooner than some might think.

ESPN's Baxter Holmes and NBA insider Shams Charania reported the biggest development in the Leonard investigation in recent weeks, stating that there was no evidence that LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer funnelled money through team sponsors to pay Leonard as part of a salary-cap circumvention scheme.

If the NBA has not found wrongdoing by Leonard or his representatives so far, it's likely for the superstar to walk away from this investigation unscathed.

TSN's Josh Lewenberg took to social media on Monday to explain what's left in the investigation and when the Toronto Raptors may sign off on the paused June 30 trade that sent him to Toronto in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and draft picks.

According to Lewenberg, once the Raptors' front office is certain Leonard won't be hit with a penalty, voided contract, or suspension, the organization will sign off on the deal.

Even though the NBA has reportedly ruled out the allegation that the Clippers funnelled money through team sponsors to Leonard, the league is still investigating whether the team's introduction of Leonard to sponsors constitutes a violation of the NBA's rules prohibiting salary-cap circumvention.

If the investigation finds that Leonard or his inner circle received benefits from sponsors that were facilitated by the Clippers (such as travel, hotel stays or other services), there could still be salary-cap consequences for the two-time NBA Finals MVP.

The league could require repayment from Leonard or the Clippers, or in an extreme case, potentially void his contract.

With NBA training camps opening at the end of September, the league has been transparent that they hope to wrap up the investigation by then.

If there's a silver lining in this ESPN report, the Leonard cap-circumvention saga appears to be near its end.
