Toronto Blue Jays swing Jeff Hoffman trade with Twins

The Jeff Hoffman era has come to an end for the Toronto Blue Jays. 

With the MLB Trade Deadline quickly approaching, the Jays continued selling off players on expiring contracts. With Kevin Gausman and Daulton Varsho finding new homes, Toronto has also parted ways with Hoffman in a deal with the Minnesota Twins on Monday afternoon. 

In exchange, the Blue Jays will acquire a trio of prospects in pitchers Dasan Hill and John Klein, as well as middle infielder Dameury Pena.

Hoffman has one year left on his current deal and is set to become a free agent following the 2027 MLB season. 

The 33-year-old right-handed pitcher has had quite a controversial stint with the Blue Jays. Hoffman initially signed with the Blue Jays in 2025 with plans to become the team's closing pitcher. 

Hoffman notched the fourth-most saves in the league last season with 33, but was also on the hook for seven blown saves as well. His most notorious moment with the Jays came in Game 7 of the World Series, where he allowed a game-tying home run off the bat of Miguel Rojas that helped the LA Dodgers steal away the championship from the Blue Jays.

Hoffman struggled to efficiently close out games this season, recording four blown saves before being removed from that role midseason. Blue Jays pitcher Louis Varland has since taken over that role, having successfully closed out all 24 of his save opportunities so far this season.
