New Blue Jays pitcher has wholesome family connection to Toronto

Even though the Toronto Blue Jays may have traded away one of the two Canadians on their roster at the deadline, one of the incoming players has deep family roots in the city.

The Blue Jays acquired veteran starter Jameson Taillon from the Chicago Cubs on Sunday in exchange for a player to be named later.

While Taillon grew up in Florida, Toronto has always been his second home.

"My parents met at the University of Toronto, and my grandma lived downtown," Taillon told Sportsnet's Hazel Mae.

"I remember having a lot of summers visiting family, seeing Blue Jays games, and going to the island."

Taillon's mother, Christie, grew up in Toronto and attended Lawrence Park Collegiate before studying sociology at the University of Toronto in the mid-70s. That's where she met his father, Michael, who was studying business administration.

Michael grew up in the small community of St. Andrews West, about an hour southeast of Ottawa.

The couple married in 1978 and then packed up their bags to move to the U.S. for work, where they eventually raised their family.

Taillon has proudly represented his roots on the international stage since he entered the majors, pitching for Canada at the 2013 and 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Now, he'll finally get to wear the uniform of the team he watched growing up.

"My family is really excited... we have a lot of ties to Canada and Toronto specifically," Taillon told reporters before Tuesday's game in Houston.

"I'm really confident that I can find something here down a stretch, and I'm excited for this."

Taillon has had a tough season with the Cubs so far, posting a 2-6 record with an ERA of 5.92, but he believes this fresh start (in a familiar spot) will put him back on track.

Taillon is expected to make his Blue Jays debut on Wednesday afternoon against the Houston Astros.
