Darko Rajaković's contract extended to lead Toronto Raptors in new Kawhi era

After bringing the Toronto Raptors back to the playoffs for the first time in four seasons, head coach Darko Rajaković has been signed on to a multi-year extension, according to the team.

Rajaković was entering the final year of his contract with the franchise after the team picked up his 2026-27 option following the 2024-2025 season. Now, Rajaković will likely be in Toronto for the next few seasons.

The terms of the deal were not released by the team.

This past season, Rajaković guided the Raptors to a 46-36 record, improving by 16 wins over the previous season, and the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference.

Raptors general manager Bobby Webster said the extension awards Rajaković for his strong development philosophy and his commitment to a "team-first culture."

"We've seen these qualities play out on the court - our team plays hard, plays together, and fights until the end. Darko knows there's more to be done, and we're looking forward to seeing the continued growth of this team," Webster said in a press release.

The Raptors will have a slightly new look and expectations for the 2026-27 season with the recent acquisition of two-time NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard.

Leonard was acquired in a deal from the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this week for Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick, in addition to five draft picks.

The 35-year-old superstar, who previously won a championship with Toronto during the 2018-19 season, will add depth to an already strong Raptors defence.

Last season, Rajaković had Toronto ranked among the top five teams in the NBA in defence.

This upcoming season will be Rajaković's fourth as Raptors head coach.

Before joining Toronto, he spent the previous nine seasons as an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, and Memphis Grizzlies.
