Toronto Maple Leafs Bobrovsky

Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly interested in making huge free agent splash

Are the Toronto Maple Leafs cooking up something big for free agency?

It's been a busy offseason for new Maple Leafs GM John Chayka, who has already made several trades and selected Gavin McKenna first overall at last week's draft. It's clear there is still more work to do, but a new report has linked Toronto to one of this summer's biggest free agents.

NHL insider David Pagnotta reported on Tuesday's edition of Leafs Morning Take that the team has a serious interest in goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.

"Toronto has serious interest by all accounts," Pagnotta said. "It does sound like, talking to people, that [Bobrovsky] is a real, legitimate option for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"They've got the cap space to do it... It's just a matter of how they are going to allocate those funds."

The Maple Leafs have already made a few goaltending moves this offseason, trading Joseph Woll to the Philadelphia Flyers and then flipping Samuel Errsson to the Ottawa Senators in a separate deal.

Toronto's NHL goaltending tandem heading into next season was set to be Anthony Stolarz and Dennis Hildeby. However, if Bobrovsky is brought into the fold, that will require at least one other move from Chayka.

Bringing on Bobrovsky represents a bit of risk for the Leafs. The 37-year-old goaltender is coming off a brutal season with the Florida Panthers and is reportedly looking for a long-term deal in the $6 million range.

If the Leafs opt to match those demands, that is a lot of money going into an aging goaltender who has already seen his play take a bit of a downward turn. Still, he is not far removed from being a pivotal player on back-to-back Stanley Cup-winning teams.

Maple Leafs fans once hated Bobrovsky for his role in eliminating Toronto in 2025, but they may be cheering for him as soon as this Fall.
