Toronto Blue Jays try unusual trick with home-run jacket and it worked

The Toronto Blue Jays needed a spark on offence.

Although the Jays snapped their six-game losing skid on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, their bats hadn't awoken in a way they were pleased with.

Heading into their contest against the Minnesota Twins on Friday night, Toronto had gone four games without a home run, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. registering the last one against the Chicago White Sox last Saturday.

That prompted them to try unusual tricks in order to spark the offence.

During game action against the Twins, cameras spotted the home-run jacket hanging in the Blue Jays dugout, with a call-to-action note attached: "Dear Jacket, Would you please wake up. We need homers."

Apparently, the nudge worked.

And the first player to break the home run drought was arguably the most unlikely source.

During fourth inning action against the Twins, catcher Brandon Valenzuela smashed the first MLB home run of his career to cap off a five-run inning.

"I didn't even feel the contact," he said post-game. "It was smooth, a good swing."

"Getting to the dugout and Vladdy with the jacket... it was an amazing feeling. I'll never forget this moment right now."

The 25-year-old catcher made his Major League debut with the Jays last week, following the thumb injury to Alejandro Kirk.

Valenzuela wasn't the only Toronto player to make the unusual note to the jacket look like a stroke of genius.

At the top of the order in the fifth inning, Daulton Varsho smashed the 100th home run of his MLB career over the fence at Rogers Centre. Toronto would go on to beat the Twins 10-4.

And while the home-run jacket has brought good vibes to the Blue Jays dugout, you have to wonder if, perhaps, it's capable of magic as well.
