Toronto Maple Leafs fire GM Brad Treliving

The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired their general manager with just eight games left in the regular season.

With the Leafs set to miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade, the team announced on Monday evening that it had parted ways with GM Brad Treliving. The 56-year-old executive was initially hired by Toronto in May 2023.

"Throughout the course of this season, there has been a deep analysis into both the current state of the Maple Leafs organization and the direction needed to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a Stanley Cup Championship to the city," said Keith Pelley, the President and CEO of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, in a press release.

"Brad Treliving is a man that we all have a deep respect and appreciation for, both as a hockey executive and as a person, but it was determined that the club must chart a new course under different leadership."

Treliving, who had previously been GM of the Calgary Flames before coming to Toronto, oversaw some major moments for the Maple Leafs during his tenure. He helped assemble last year's team that took the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers to Game 7 of the second round.

He was also part of the management team that traded superstar Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights shortly before free agency last summer. Treliving will leave having posted a 139-92-27 record over three seasons while serving as Leafs GM, and had one year remaining on his current deal before being fired.

There has been no word on who will step into the GM role as Treliving's replacement. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun is reporting that the Leafs will conduct a formal search for Treliving's successor that will start immediately.

Pelley is slated to meet with the media on Tuesday with a press conference scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
