Toronto Blue Jays pitchers dropping like flies and season hasn't even started yet

Spring training hasn't finished yet but the Toronto Blue Jays have already run into injury trouble.

Training camp began with Shane Bieber suffering from right forearm inflammation. Then, José Berríos was ruled out with a stress fracture in his right elbow. 

Now, Trey Yesavage is on the injured list too.

MLB.com's Keegan Matheson first reported on Thursday that Trey Yesavage is joining the Jays' other starting pitchers on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement.

"It’s something that he reported to camp with, and it obviously led to his slow build-up, as well," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said on MLB.com. "Right now, he’s feeling good, and he’s in a better place now to continue to ramp up."

Yesavage was an early favourite to win the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2026, after a postseason run where he cemented himself in Toronto's starting rotation.

The formidable Blue Jays rotation is now missing more than half its starting pitchers.

Blue Jays rotation to start the season now projects to be:

• Kevin Gausman
• Dylan Cease
• Eric Lauer
• Cody Ponce
• Max Scherzer

Lauer threw 68 pitches over four innings in a minor league game on Wednesday.

Yesavage is scheduled to pitch a minor league game on March 25, but he's yet to pitch in the Grapefruit League during training camp.

The offseason signing of Dylan Cease is looking even more important now. The former San Diego Padres pitcher signed a seven-year contract with Toronto worth $210 million early on in MLB free agency.
