The Toronto Blue Jays are changing up the look outside of Rogers Centre and removing a much-talked-about statue of the team's former billionaire owner.
After announcing plans for a Joe Carter statue to be installed outside the ballpark, it looks like Ted Rogers' statue will be removed. The Rogers statue stands outside Gate 6 of the Rogers Centre and has a contentious history among some Blue Jays fans for its perceived deification of the team's front office.
The 12-foot bronze sculpture was initially unveiled in 2013 as the first and only statue of a Blue Jays figure outside the stadium. That will finally be changing with Carter's statue set to be unveiled on July 18, and the removal of the controversial Ted Rogers statue.
Mitch Bannon of The Athletic was first to report that the Ted Rogers statue will be removed and relocated to a corporate office.
Ted Rogers established Rogers Communications and acted as the President and CEO from 1967 all the way until his death in 2008, in addition to serving as the Blue Jays owner between 2000 and 2008.
There is no doubt that Rogers was a significant figure in Blue Jays history, but many fans will be happy to see a beloved player like Carter memorialized with a sculpture of his own.
