Ex-Toronto Raptors star reveals health scare that left him 'covered in his own blood'

Former Toronto Raptors star Chris Bosh took to social media on Wednesday to give an update on a recent health scare that left the retired 11-time All-Star covered in his own blood.

The 41-year-old, who last played in the NBA during the 2015-16 season, uploaded a video in which he reminded everybody not to take a second in life for granted.

According to Bosh, he was preparing to head out on a date with his wife, Adrienne Williams Bosh, before falling unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, Bosh found himself in a very rough state.

"So I woke up covered in my own blood," Bosh detailed. "It was crazy. It was fast. It was instant. There was no warning."

The Raptors legend said he doesn't remember anything about the incident. Though he didn't clarify exactly what health issue he may have been dealing with, it did leave him with noticeable bruising under his eyes.

"I won't get into specifics, but you can kind of see I'm still recovering. I'm not going to try and hide that in case I look different."

The former power forward also wrote about the incident on his blog on Substack, The Last Chip.

"I was walking from my closet into the bathroom, getting ready for an evening out, when my body turned on me," he wrote. "A numbing sensation shot down my left leg, that sharp, electric feeling you get when you bump your funny bone. Before I knew it, I was on the floor."

Bosh appears to be on the mend following the scary and completely unexpected incident. While very unfortunate, it seems to have changed his perspective on life going forward.

"It was a scary thing and it came fast. It made me really have a different outlook on life and how things things go. What we do for our ourselves, what we do for our family, how we live our lives.

The biggest takeaway from this, in Bosh's perspective, is that nobody knows when their time may come.

"Don't wait. Don't wait to take action. You might be wanting to get a promotion. You might want to try out for the team. You might want to go on that vacation. It might be so many different things that people want to do, that we want to do, that we never do."

The Raptors selected Bosh fourth overall in a 2003 draft class which featured some of the game's all-time greats in LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwyane Wade. He went on to spend seven seasons in Toronto, five of which he was named an All-Star.

Bosh wound up signing a six-year deal with the Miami Heat following the 2009-10 season, and would go on to win two championships in 2012 and 2013.

Though still at the top of his game, he failed to return to the court following the 2015-16 season due to blood clotting issues. His attempted comeback never worked out, and eventually resulted in him announcing his retirement in 2019.
