Toronto Maple Leafs Savard

Toronto Maple Leafs fire power-play coach for obvious reasons

The Toronto Maple Leafs are making a change behind the bench as the team searches for answers.

The team announced Monday evening that assistant coach Marc Savard has been fired. This comes as the Leafs sit second-last in the Eastern Conference and are in the midst of a three-game losing streak

Savard joined Toronto's coaching staff in June 2024 at the same time Craig Berube was hired as the Leafs' head coach.

Savard was in charge of the Maple Leafs' power play, which has sputtered to a league-worst success-rate of 13.3 per cent. The 48-year-old is a veteran of over 800 NHL games with the New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers, and Boston Bruins.

He had previously been an associate coach with the St. Louis Blues and Flames before coming to the Leafs. Toronto is not expected to hire a replacement, per NHL insider Pierre LeBrun

The Leafs' coaching staff will now consist of Berube, alongside assistants Derek Lalonde and Mike Van Ryn.

Patience is wearing thin in Toronto, as the team is set to enter the holiday break with some of the worst odds in the entire league to make the playoffs. If the Leafs do miss the postseason, it would be the first time in 10 years.
