The Toronto Blue Jays will be without a key player for the rest of the postseason.
Anthony Santander, who batted in the clean-up spot in Game 3 against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, is injured again. His back was feeling stiff and sore, according to Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
The Blue Jays have removed Santander from the postseason roster. It's a move that makes Santander ineligible not only for the remainder of the ALCS but also for the World Series, should Toronto make it that far.
Joey Loperfido is taking Santander's spot on the roster, while Isiah Kiner-Falefa is entering the starting lineup.
Kiner-Falefa will start at second base. Ernie Clement is moving from second to third base, while Addison Barger shifts from third base to right field.
The Blue Jays had to get the Santander-for-Loperfido swap approved by Major League Baseball. MLB postseason rules allow teams to replace a player who is unable to play due to injury.
"Dr. Gary Green, MLB's Medical Director, confirmed the injury after a full review of the medical information," the Blue Jays announced in a media release.
Santander, 30, was a marquee offseason acquisition by the Blue Jays. The Venezuelan slugger hit 44 home runs for the Baltimore Orioles last season, but his production cratered during his first season in Toronto due to a shoulder injury. Santander was limited to 54 games during the regular season, hitting just six home runs.
Santander has appeared in five postseason games for the Blue Jays this fall, going 3-for-15, with one walk and two RBIs.

Bo Bichette, meanwhile, is attempting to get healthy enough to help out. He was spotted running on the field on Thursday afternoon in Seattle.
The Blue Jays shortstop, who hasn't played since Sept. 6, is surely desperate to get back and help his teammates.
