Here are the teams the Toronto Blue Jays are most likely to face in postseason

The Toronto Blue Jays will be back in the playoffs thanks to an unexpected and impressive 2025 season.

Despite not having high expectations entering 2025, the Blue Jays have been able to put together a 91-68 record through 159 games. They punched their ticket to the postseason this past weekend, and currently hold the top spot in the AL East Division.

But just barely.

The Blue Jays have hit a bit of a rut as of late. Prior to picking up a massive 6-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night, they'd lost six of their last seven outings. That has paved the way for the New York Yankees to tie them with matching 91-68 records, though the Jays still hold the tiebreaker thanks to winning the season series.

If the Blue Jays win the AL East, they'll also be guaranteed a top-two seed in the American League, which would get them a bye through the wild-card round and advance straight to the AL Division Series.

So who will they play?

If the postseason began today, the Blue Jays would be the No. 1 seed in the American League and play the winner of the Yankees and Red Sox series in the ALDS.

But a lot can change between now and the end of the regular season on Sunday.

If the Yankees pass them, the Blue Jays would drop down to the fourth seed. That would put Toronto in a best-of-three Wild Card matchup against the fifth seed, which is currently Boston. But the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Guardians, or Houston Astros could each still sneak into that spot.

If the Blue Jays have to play a Wild Card matchup, the entirety of the three-game series would be played at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

The Red Sox are the odds-on favourites to finish as the fifth seed (75 per cent per PlayoffStatus.com), followed by Detroit (21 per cent), Cleveland (4 per cent), and Houston (<1 per cent).

The Blue Jays have won eight of 13 meetings versus the Yankees this season, outscoring them 70-59 in the process. New York did beat Toronto twice in a three-game series earlier this month, though.

Similar results have come against the Red Sox, whom the Jays have beaten in seven of 12 games this season. Over the course of those 12 games, however, Toronto has been outscored by Boston 55-47.

The Tigers snapped an eight-game losing streak on Thursday. The Blue Jays won four of seven games against Detroit this season, outscoring the Tigers 35-26.

The Jays will hope to widen the gap between themselves and the Yankees, as they are set to begin a three-game series on Friday versus the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees, meanwhile, have a final three-game series of their own versus the Baltimore Orioles.
