FIFA is now hiring for roles at Toronto games but there's a catch

The application process has begun for jobs at the FIFA World Cup in 2026 — but, these are volunteer positions.

Approximately 65,000 volunteers will be hired before the World Cup kicks off on June 11, with open gigs available in the three host countries: Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

Vancouver and Toronto are among the 16 host cities, meaning FIFA is looking for a large number of volunteers in those two Canadian locales.

"Volunteers will provide support across 23 functional areas at official and non-official sites such as stadiums, training sites, airports, hotels and more," FIFA said in a media release.

Those selected must commit to eight shifts between June 11 and July 19, 2026. No prior volunteering experience is required, though you must be at least 18 years old and eligible to volunteer in the host country at the time of application.

Along with getting to be close to the action, food and drinks are also provided for volunteers during their shifts.

With 48 countries competing, the 2026 tournament will be the largest FIFA World Cup ever held. A total of 80 matches will take place during a six-week span, with 13 matches being held in Canada: seven at BC Place in Vancouver and six at BMO Field in Toronto.

"Proficiency in any additional languages is a plus," FIFA says, noting that the ability to speak French is considered an asset for jobs in Canada.

"From students to retirees, from first-timers to seasoned veterans, the FIFA World Cup 26 Volunteer Community will be made up of a diverse group of individuals united by a passion for football, volunteering and community."

Successful applicants must attend "volunteer team tryouts" in October before training begins in March.

"Volunteers are the heart, soul and smile of FIFA tournaments," said FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

"They get to show off their local pride, gain a behind-the-scenes view of the tournament and make memories and friendships that can last a lifetime, while supporting a historic event. We hope interested individuals will join us as we welcome the world to North America in 2026."
