rogers centre dome open today

Rogers Centre dome opens for first time in 2025 so it's basically summer now

While the Toronto Maple Leafs might've soured the mood of much of the city's sports fans for their performance on Wednesday night, the Toronto Blue Jays are hoping to bring back a little bit of light.

On Thursday, the Blue Jays decided that it's finally time for one of the organization's most-anticipated days: the first day of the year that the Rogers Centre roof will be open.

The Jays were seen testing the stadium's retractable roof late last month, though it took a few weeks for their plans to get underway.

The Blue Jays themselves also posted a time-lapse video of the roof opening, which takes about 20 minutes in real time.

While the Rogers Centre's roof might not be as groundbreaking as it once was in 1989 — when it opened as the world's first retractable roof on a sports stadium — it's still a welcome feature for being both a) iconic and b) practical. Though most of the other MLB teams often have to deal with weather issues while playing at home, it's hardly ever a concern for Canada's lone major league team.

First pitch for Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays is set for 3:07 p.m. EDT. Kevin Gausman is expected to be on the mound for Toronto to start, while Zack Littell will be pitching for the Rays.

If you're planning a last-minute trip to the ballpark, tickets are still available starting at $20.

It is Toronto's last game of the series before they host the Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres. A week from today, they'll be flying down to sunny Florida to take on the Rays once again.

With some light rain in the forecast for Friday and Saturday, it might take a few days before the dome is opened once again.

The Blue Jays are currently sitting at exactly .500 on the year, going 21-21 through 42 games.
