Maple Leafs fans throw jerseys on ice after team lets Toronto down again

Toronto Maple Leafs fans didn't exactly get their money's worth on Wednesday night.

And for some fans, they might just have to break the bank to try to rectify some of their choices on Wednesday night.

While many fans opted to be leaving the arena early, some fans made their statements in a bit more of a bold fashion.

With the Leafs losing 6-1 to the Florida Panthers in Game 5 of their second round series to fall behind 3-2 and sit just one game away from elimination, multiple fans opted for an age-old protest move: the mid-game jersey toss.

"There goes a jersey. There's the first one, there's the second one," ESPN's Ray Ferraro told viewers.

Referees had to pick up the uniforms off the ice, briefly causing a stoppage in play.

While it might seem like years since a once-common occurrence has happened in Scotiabank Arena, it actually took place just this past October during a 5-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues early in the regular season.

It should be noted that throwing jerseys on the ice is a clear violation of the NHL Code of Conduct.

"Any disruptive, irresponsible, and/or illegal behaviors that threaten the physical well-being of others are forbidden," the NHL.com site reads. "This includes participating in or instigating altercations (physical or verbal), throwing objects, or engaging in other inappropriate or destructive behaviors by reason of intoxication, chemical impairment, or otherwise."

Toronto had won the first two games of the series on home ice, but have been outscored 13-5 in the past three games, all wins for the Panthers.

The Leafs now head to Florida, with a pivotal Game 6 slated for Friday night.

Should the Leafs win, they'll return to Scotiabank Arena for Game 7, and a chance to redeem themselves in front of their home fans once again.

But if they lose either of their next two games, a few jersey tosses might be the least of the Leafs' concerns as they stare down yet another disappointing playoff exit.
