Campaniae

Campaniae is a swish, stylish oasis set smack dab in the middle of Yorkdale Shopping Centre. From the team behind Delysées, the new spot combines luxury and quality with a tempting menu of French-Moroccan fare.

If you and your sweet tooth call Toronto home, it's likely that you're well acquainted with the name Delysées. Polished and poised, it's a place that trades in flawless pastries, eye-catching packaging and the type of dreamy atmosphere that makes the world (momentarily) slip away.

Made up of three locations and an active online shop, the company has now expanded further with an elegant restaurant where savoury sustenance is the star.

Campaniae"Our dream, our family's dream, is to feature my mom's food,” says co-owner Fred Naggar, who opened Campaniae in March with business and life partner, Khariz Naggar.

"My mom is from Casablanca. … We grew up with French-Moroccan food. We really liked the idea of a tapas-style restaurant with French-Moroccan food, serving really good cocktails and Champagne."

CampaniaePart restaurant, part Champagne bar, Campaniae fits right in with the mall's ritziest tenants. Designed by Khariz Naggar, who also created Delysées' signature look, the restaurant is glitzy, with plush seating designed to cradle swooning shopaholics.

"Every piece of this place is custom. We took it to the bone and rebuilt everything," explains Fred Naggar. "It has a touch of Delysées. The luxury feel. But also, we want it to feel comfortable."

The feathers and statement chandeliers may bring the glam, but there’s nothing quite like pillowy, velour-lined banquettes and weighty curtains to bring the cozy.

A place with a kids' menu, Campaniae is also an LMVH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) partner. Much like the mall itself, it caters to a diverse audience—those uninterested in breaking free from the chokehold of chicken fingers, and those in dire need of bubbles.

"It’s a great brand to be associated with," says Naggar. "We carry the Veuve. We carry the Doms. We're becoming a little bit more of a destination for Champagne."

CampaniaeBut cocktails are also a draw, from the orange-scented Midnight in Morocco ($18), a riff on the stubbornly popular espresso martini, to the bourbon-based Sunset in Marrakesh ($17).

CampaniaeLaced with date shrub and beets, the latter is delicately sweet and refreshing, its vibrant hue more influenced by the root veg than its flavour.

CampaniaeOn a menu that jumps from punchy Roasted Beet Salads ($18) to homey Couscous Merguez ($38) plates stacked with spiced sausages, slow-roasted vegetables and tender couscous, it's clear that Grandma Naggar can cook.

Campaniae"My mom taught the entire kitchen," laughs Naggar. "She taught the kitchen how to make our food that we grew up with. Then, they added their twist. I added my twist. My wife added her twist."

Founded on home cooking, Campaniae's offerings are comforting and real. “We really focus on quality, with both companies," says Naggar.

The chichi surroundings may not feel like grandma's place, but the elements on the plate are as nourishing and painstakingly made as anything coming out of her kitchen.

Beyond quality, spices are a throughline in Campaniae's every dish. Imported from North Africa and judiciously combined, they're pungent and rich, earthy and striking. After all, says Naggar, "Moroccan food is known for its spice."

CampaniaeOn a Campaniae Sharing Platter ($36), they perfume tomato dip, silky souk hummus and the zingy ground beef plumping up Moroccan cigars.

CampaniaeStuffed with Gruyère, briouats are crispy and gooey and just the thing to help ease you into the evening hours.

CampaniaeIt's then that you may find the team's more substantial plates calling your name. Opt for Roasted Moroccan Sea Bass ($28), and face a crisped, lemon-marinated fillet, herby mound of tabbouleh, fresh salad and smoky romesco sauce.

Balanced and bright, it's a dish that unites several bold flavours, without losing any in the merger.

CampaniaeThis being a Delysées offshoot, dessert is a must. Though options are limited (if you want the full lineup, it's worth popping over to the nearby Delysées café), the team keeps a steady supply of best-sellers and exclusive bites, such as Egyptian kunafa, on the menu.

CampaniaeA multi-layered composition of cocoa sponge, milk chocolate mousse, semi-sweet chocolate mousse and a shiny slick of mirror glaze, Le Duo de Delysées ($18) is a perfect example of the team's handle on precise, crowd-pleasing patisserie.

For family meals, meetings, languorous lunches or post-work pick-me-ups, Campaniae offers diners something unique. "We complement [the mall's] other spots. We're just so different," raves Naggar.
