Legendary Toronto music venue around for 70 years is up for sale

Toronto's iconic El Mocambo music venue, a staple in the city's entertainment and live music scene for more than seven decades, is now up for sale after its owner and former Dragons' Den star, Michael Wekerle, defaulted on $55.6 million in debt through the companies he controls.

Last Friday, an Ontario court intervened and appointed Ernst & Young Inc. to oversee the venue's sale. The music venue first opened its doors in 1948, and after decades of hosting legendary artists like The Rolling Stones and Blondie, Wekerle purchased the venue in 2014 for $3.8 million.

The investor invested over $30 million to refurbish the space, and despite multiple setbacks, the venue reopened in 2020, only for it to be delayed once again due to the global pandemic.

Wekerle was taken to court by Waygar Capital Inc., a creditor that claims Wekerle's companies have failed to repay loans, which include funds used for El Mocambo's renovations.

As reported by The Globe and Mail, Wekerle's total debts across several ventures amount to roughly $88 million.

In January, Waygar Capital applied to put El Mocambo into receivership, citing unpaid loans dating back to 2021. At a hearing in March, lawyers for Waygar Capital urged Ontario's Superior Court of Justice to appoint a receiver, arguing that the club would be shut down. Justice Peter Osborne appointed Fuller Landau Group Inc. as a financial monitor to help stabilize the situation and allow operations to continue under existing management.

"Business will continue as usual with the El Mocambo management team maintaining their excellent concierge service to clients," Wekerle told The Globe and Mail, noting that Ernst & Young is "taking all necessary steps to find a buyer who will preserve the legacy of the El Mocambo."

The bidding process in the court order expects a deadline of June 30 for bidding offers and a closing date no later than Aug. 15.

When contacted about the venue's future earlier this year, El Mocambo management told blogTO that there is "nothing to worry about," adding that, "We are all good here and carrying on business as usual."

El Mocambo is located at 464 Spadina Ave. #462.
