If you, like me, revel in the simple pleasure of seeing your humble hometown on the big screen, you're in for an early Christmas present, because there are a whole host of new titles on Netflix that use our very own Ontario as a backdrop.
It's no secret that Toronto is a popular hub for television and movie filming, and it also happens to be a great actor, seamlessly transforming into other cities with ease, from the fictional Gotham City in Titans to New York City in shows like The Boys and Suits, though, selfishly, I like it best when Toronto gets to actually be Toronto, á la Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
In any event, Toronto, alongside plenty of Ontario towns, remain go-to backdrops for for a slew of productions yearround — including a few that are filming right now — and when they come out, like these new titles recently have, it gives the province's residents a much-needed dose of local pride.
According to Netflix in Your Neighbourhood, here are the latest releases to the streaming site that have been filmed in Ontario.
Starring Golden Globe and Academy Award-nominated actor Coleman Domingo as main character, Muncie Daniels, this limited series which dropped on Nov. 28 used a number of Toronto locations like Underpass Park, East York's Ritz Restaurant and the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres to bring the story to life.
There's nothing quite like a cheesy — ahem, I mean, romantic — Christmas movie to get you into the festive spirit, and Netflix is absolutely overflowing with them, like this flick starring Christina Milian, which was filmed at spots in the city like The Opera House, Royal Alexandra Theatre (which even makes an appearance on the movie's poster), Queen's Park and The Comerade.
Starring English actress Emily Carey, of House of the Dragon fame, this upbeat comedy is your classic fish-out-of-water tale revolving around the fashion industry. While it takes place in London, England, a couple of episodes take place in —and were actually filmed in — in our nation's capital, Ottawa.
Remember when I called Netflix's Christmas movies cheesy? Well, this one, starring Mean Girls' Lacey Chabert and Canadian actor, Dustin Milligan (who you may remember as Ted on Schitt's Creek), absolutely takes the cake in the most delightfully campy of ways. In this 90-minute fever dream, Brockville and Ottawa both cosplay as the fictional Hope Springs, New York.
