A new NYC-style pizza shop just opened underneath a popular Toronto bar, giving partygoers a desirable destination to line their stomachs after a long night.
Sure, in Toronto we don't particularly need any more pizza shops — you could throw a rock at any major intersection in the city and hit at least two of them — but is there really such a thing as too many?
No need to reply, because the answer (unless you're allergic to lactose, gluten and tomatoes, I suppose) is an absolute, easy no. And there's perhaps nowhere in the city where a slice shop would be better appreciated than the bustling downtown core, just steps from Union Station and its connected pals, Scotiabank Arena, the Rogers Centre and the CN Tower.
Wisely, that's where the city's newest pizza joint, Side Piece, has decided to set up shop. Even more wisely, it's situated directly below the longstanding Loose Moose bar.
Helmed by Chef Gord Mackie, Culinary Director at Service Inspired Restaurants, which operates, among many other properties, the Loose Moose, the pizza shop serves up pies and slices made with 72-hour cold-fermented dough.
It's quietly tucked down an alley, true to the "nobody knows" half of the shop's "nobody knows. Everybody knows" tagline, but, as is the case with so many of Toronto's talked-about pizza shops, it can't be long before the latter is true, too.
The shop officially opened on Nov. 5, so should we expect Badiali-level lineups in the near future? You'll have to try a slice and decide for yourself.
Side Piece Pizza is located at 146 Front St. W.
