Popular Toronto sushi restaurant opening in a new neighbourhood
A restaurant known for having some of the "prettiest sushi boxes" in Toronto is gearing up to bring its maki, nigiri and poke to a new neighbourhood in the city.
If you're not already familiar with Toronto's Toro Toro, there's a decent chance its signature sleek black boxes filled to the brim with charred tataki and glistening sashimi have made it onto your social media feeds without you even knowing.
Founded in Vaughan in 2021, the sushi shop has seen staggering popularity over the past five years, expanding to six locations across the GTA and one in Calgary, but despite the fervour, only a single location at Yonge and Bloor has served downtown Toronto in that time.
Soon, though, it'll be getting its long-awaited accomplice: a sister to the south in Liberty Village.
Setting up shop at SVNTY, on the east side of Strachan south of Wellington, the sushi shop finds itself in auspicious environs, surrounded by apartment buildings, offices and well-attended gyms all packed with trend- and health-conscious locals who'll, no doubt, jump at the chance to pick up a curated box of sushi that'll complement their equally curated social feeds.
And it looks like Toro Toro is just as eager to endear itself to the neighbourhood as the neighbourhood is to welcome the restaurant, because, on Saturday, Sept. 13, it'll be making rounds in the area with a trolley, handing out undisclosed "gifts" for its soon-to-be neighbours, both human and canine.
Toro Toro Liberty Village will be located at 72 Ordnance St. and is slated to open this September.
