Canada issues urgent recall for popular tea brand

Tea lovers, make sure to check your collection as a popular brand of tea is part of a recall across Canada.

On Tuesday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall of a brand of tea sold in Canada due to a possible allergen. The product being recalled is DavidsTea's Organic Sneeze Ease Herbal Infusion.

"The affected product is being recalled from the marketplace because it may contain almond, which is not declared on the label," warns the statement.

The recall has been categorized as a class one, which means that “there is a high risk that consuming the food may lead to serious health problems or death.”

Tree nut allergic reactions can develop quickly and progress from mild to severe, with the most severe form of allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Symptoms include trouble breathing, a drop in blood pressure or shock, which could lead to loss of consciousness and even death.

As of May 12, there have been no reported reactions associated with consuming the tea.

DavidsTea Inc. is recalling the affected product, which comes as a loose-leaf tea in a 50-gram package with the Universal Product code 101202100502 and code 000CHA831216. The product is made in Montreal.

Canadians are urged to check if they have the recalled product.

"Do not consume recalled products to which you are allergic or sensitive as they may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction," states the CFIA. "Do not serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products."

The tea was sold online across Canada. If you find that you have the affected tea, make sure to throw it out or return it.

According to the CFIA, it's currently conducting a food safety investigation, which means that it could lead to other products being recalled. The agency is also making sure that the industry is removing the product from the marketplace.
