A new, hidden cocktail bar just opened in Toronto, but it's not going to stay under the radar for long.
Toronto loves all manner of obscured culinary experiences: hidden gems, secret speakeasies and ultra-exclusive pop-ups. The only problem is, once they've been discovered, the sheen kind of wears off, which is why it's always thrilling to have a new one open its doors.
For Leslieville residents, the latest is Bar Bokeh, a speakeasy-adjacent bar concept that soft-opened over the weekend of May 22, only to be met with immediate, uproarious acclaim from the neighbourhood.
You don't have to utter any secret passwords or creep down dank alleyways to find it, though. Instead, the mode of access at Bar Bokeh is one that feels thoroughly 2026: walk through Matcha Haus's Queen East location and locate the bar's entrance at the back.
Once you push past the door, painted a deep, sexy maroon to foil the matcha bar's grassy greens, you'll be met with an equally sultry space. Ember-like pops of orange break through dim lighting, while tented muslin hangs over the bar.
On the menu, it's a mix of Asian-inspired bites with punchy cocktails to match. Expect flavours of jasmine, calamansi and ube to intermingle in mid-century modern glassware long into the wee hours of the night.
Sure, the whole speakeasy thing feels a little played out, but when it's done right, there's no arguing that the conspiratorial experience of pushing your way through a cafe like you know the owner adds something fun to what would otherwise be a standard night out.
And, while the novelty, more or less, wears off after the first time, Bar Bokeh might just have what it takes to keep people coming back: no gimmicks needed.
Bar Bokeh is located at 890 Queen St. E.
