Toronto neighbourhood about to get new matcha cafe with a speakeasy in the back

A matcha cafe that shares its space with a new speakeasy bar is coming soon to a Toronto neighbourhood.

If there are two things Toronto can't seem to get enough of, it's matcha and speakeasies. I mean, seriously, how many more matcha shops and not-so-secret bars can we get before the city imposes some sort of limit on them?

At the same time, I'm not complaining. Matcha, when done right and with quality tea, is delicious and speakeasies, when they serve good drinks and emit good vibes, can make for the ultimate night out location.

That's why, even considering the unparalleled level of saturation on both the matcha and speakeasy scenes in Toronto, it's still exciting to learn of new ones, and even more so to learn that the two will soon be combined in a joint venture.

Bathurst newcomer Matcha Haus will soon be expanding with a second location, this time taking on Leslieville.

Despite only opening its inaugural location this past June, Matcha Haus has already made quite the stir in the city, thanks to its menu consisting solely of matcha-based beverages with tasty twists like pistachio and pumpkin spice.

It was only a matter of time before the matcha cafe expanded its footprint in the city, particularly amid Toronto's unrelenting matcha-mania, but this one will be a little different.

The Queen Street East space will not only be home to Matcha Haus, but also to Bar Bokeh, a stylish cocktail bar concept sharing the address in the back.

"The front will be the cafe during the day, and the back will be the bar at night," a representative for Matcha Haus tells blogTO. Sounds like a recipe for matcha martinis, and I, for one, am here for it.

While the exact opening date for both Matcha Haus and Bar Bokeh has yet to be determined, the Matcha Haus representative tells blogTO that they aim to open the cafe "sometime in November."

As for the speakeasy, that'll likely come down the pipes a little later. In any event, the new concept poses yet another major win for the already flourishing Leslieville food and drink scene.

Matcha Haus and Bar Bokeh are to be located at 890 Queen St. E.
