A popular Toronto-based Jamaican chain is expanding its reach to hungry commuters with its latest business venture: a patty kiosk at one of the city's busiest subway stations.
If there's one thing you should know about me, it's that I am deeply passionate about a subway patty.
The way they establish their presence, wafting buttery aromas from their incubators at Gateway or Cafe on the Go, promising to serve as de facto hand warmers along your journey (before they disappear into a pile of crumbs and a grease-stained bag) is as quintessentially Toronto as rolling your eyes when an out-of-towner pronounces the second "t."
Simply put, subway patties are magic. Or as close to it as you can get when underground, riding a sub-par transit system.
Lucky for me and everyone else who shares my affinity for subway patties, one downtown subway station is about to get a new kiosk devoted entirely to Jamaican patties, and it's coming to us courtesy of beloved restaurant chain Roywoods.
The chain's first venture outside of its tried-and-true dine-in and takeout approach to Caribbean cuisine, the patty kiosk is setting up shop at TMU, formerly Dundas, subway station, serving up hot (and seed oil-free, if that matters to you) patties made fresh daily.
With locations in CityPlace, Union Station, Square One Shopping Centre and at Bay and Dundas, Roywoods has more than established its legacy in the city over its decade in business, and the new patty kiosk marks both a departure from the restaurant's typical M.O. and an homage to Toronto culture.
Roywoods' TMU Station patty kiosk officially opens for business on Thursday, Feb. 5, and they're giving away a ton of free patties to mark opening day.
How many free patties are they giving away, you ask? 416. It's only appropriate.
