Toronto burger restaurant forced to close to make way for condos

A Toronto burger restaurant that serves some of the city's favourite cheap eats will soon be closing its doors to make way for a construction project.

Toronto has no shortage of smash burger joints — that much goes without saying — but for whatever reason (maybe because they're delicious), the city never seems to tire of them.

While a few chains have managed to rise to the top of the pack — think Burger Drops, Matty's Patty's, RUDY — there's still always a place for the little guys. Since 2023, Yonge and Dundas' Mayday Burger has been one such independent with a cult following.

A self-described "minimalist burger shop," Mayday Burger specializes in no-frills, classic burgers, fries, milkshakes and all manner of other things fried, griddled and delightfully greasy.

Unfortunately, it looks like Mayday Burger's tenancy in the heart of downtown Toronto is fated to be a short and sweet one, as the burger shop announces it'll soon be closing down for good.

"We'll be closing our doors on November 11st [sic], as our building is set to be demolished," the caption of a Nov. 2 Instagram post on Mayday Burger's Instagram reads.

"It’s bittersweet to say goodbye to this little spot that’s been home to so many good burgers, laughs, and memories."

With a proposed condo tower slated to stand where Mayday Burger exists today, the burger joint has been left with no option other than to close its doors. Before too long, a pile of rubble will be all that remains of the block, after all.

The burger joint isn't the only business affected by the impending demolition of the north-east block of Dundas East and Victoria Street Lane.

In October of 2025, the legendary Imperial Pub, Mayday Burger's neighbour, announced it, too, would be closing permanently after over eight decades in business this November.

As heartbreaking as learning that your favourite local spot is closing can be, there is a thin silver lining in the fact that, as of the time of publication, there's still a little bit of time left to visit both Mayday Burger and the Imperial Pub before they're gone.

Mayday Burger will be closing on Tuesday, Nov. 11, while the Imperial Pub will hang on a little longer, closing after its last service on Saturday, Nov. 15.

Mayday Burger is located at 66 Dundas St. E.
