One of Toronto's best Greek restaurants is opening a second location

A much-loved Greek restaurant on one of Toronto's trendiest streets is about to open a new location after over 10 years in the neighbourhood.

Though Ossington Avenue is riddled with exceptional restaurants that only seem to be growing in numbers as the years ramble on, there remain a few standouts that always seem to make it at the top of everyone's recommendation lists.

When it comes to Greek cuisine, the reigning champ on Ossington is the much-loved Mamakas, a bright, corner taverna that serves traditional Greek dishes, drawn from owner Thanos Tripi's own childhood memories.

Though it's hard to beat the authenticity of the Greek food (and the restaurant experience) you'll find on Danforth, Mamakas certainly comes close, plus it has the added benefit of Ossington street cred.

From Mamakas has sprung equally successful offshoots like Agora, a quick service concept, and Koukla, a chic bar that serves mezes just up the street from its big sister, Mamakas.

Mamakas is even soon to expand into the retail space, preparing to sell their very own luxe brand of early harvest extra virgin olive oil through their website starting Nov. 17 and on the shelves at Mamakas, Agora and Koukla this December.

It's all exciting, to be sure, but one bit of news from the Mamakasphere stands above the rest: after 10 years on Ossington, Mamakas will soon be opening a second location in Summerhill.

"This next chapter has been in motion for some time," Thanos Tripi tells blogTO.

Set to open in a residential unit at Tricon's The James (10 Price Street), Tripi explains to blogTO that Summerhill had been on the team's radar for "a long time — probably eight years or more" before all the pieces finally came together.

"The conversation with Tricon began back in 2022, and it just felt like the right partnership from the start," Tripi tells blogTO.

"We weren't in a rush to grow for growth's sake—we wanted the right space, the right energy, and the right community. After ten years on Ossington, the timing and fit with Summerhill just clicked."

Now, they're on the precipice of finally launching the new project, with the admittedly broad hope of opening in 2026.

It's a great time for Summerhill and Rosedale, food-wise, with spots like Seahorse bringing accessible fine dining into the fray, and fellow Ossington stalwart Manita also planting the roots of its sophomore location just down the road.

Tripi tells blogTO that, while the Summerhill location will still be undeniably Mamakas, "every space tells its own story." The new location, for example, will include a private dining room inspired by Trapezi, a private dining space on the Koukla property.

"It's an evolution rather than a replica—familiar in spirit, but with its own personality," he says.

We may have to wait until 2026 to experience the full expression of that evolution, but in the meantime, you can get a taste of what Mamakas will soon be bringing to Price Street by visiting their Ossington location at 80 Ossington Ave.
