Here's what stations on the next major TTC subway extension will look like

A major TTC extension will soon carry the Yonge Street leg of the TTC's Line 1 Yonge-University north of Toronto's city limit.

Finch Station has been the northern terminus on the Yonge stretch of Line 1 since 1974, an over half-century-long run that is set to finally end in the coming years with the forthcoming Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE) stations.

The YNSE is set to extend the line another eight kilometres north into Vaughan, Markham, and Richmond Hill, adding five stations to the rapid transit network.

As early works progress for the YNSE project, the provincial government and Metrolinx have released the first detailed glimpses of what these stations may look like.

The new conceptual renderings revealed on Thursday come as Metrolinx seeks out partners to design and build the three underground stations and two surface-level stations on the extension.

A request for qualifications has been issued for these future stations, along with rail and systems contracts, and while designs have not yet been finalized, the images offer a potential look into the future of the TTC's busiest route.

Even ahead of shovels hitting the ground, the extension has already triggered a wave of development along Yonge Street north of the Finch Station, including a conglomeration of towers planned in the Yonge and Steeles area.

Though no completion date has been confirmed for the extension, it's evident that the TTC subway map will look a whole lot different in the near future.
