U.S. President Donald Trump has cancelled all trade negotiations with Canada, and he's blaming Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
A television advertisement created by Ford's Ontario PC government, featuring an anti-tariff speech by former U.S. President and conservative political icon Ronald Reagan, drew an irate response from Trump on the controversial politician's Truth Social platform.
"The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs. The ad was for $75,000," wrote Trump on Thursday night, adding, "They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts."
It’s official: Ontario’s new advertising campaign in the U.S. has launched.

Using every tool we have, we’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada. The way to prosperity is by working together.

Trump switched to all-caps for the second half of his message, writing "tariffs are very important to the national security, and economy, of the U.S.A," and announced that "all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated."
The issue was brought to the President by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, which shared on social media that the foundation "learned that the Government of Ontario, Canada, created an ad campaign using selective audio and video of President Ronald Reagan delivering his Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade,' dated April 25, 1987."
"The ad misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address, and the Government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks," reads the statement, adding that the foundation "is reviewing its legal options in this matter."
I just watched the full April 25, 1987 Presidential Address by Ronald Reagan and the full version is actually far more supportive of free trade and against tariffs than the short clip in the Canadian ad. Watch it for yourself https://t.co/4kFH88fmuz pic.twitter.com/slqWhzSDqz

Ford, who famously voiced his support for Trump in the lead-up to the 2024 Presidential election, has been taking heat on social media for his role in the trade talks breaking down.
