Ontario's winter forecast for 2025 has arrived and here's what's in store

As much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news, there are officially less than six weeks left of summer in Ontario, meaning it won't be long before you'll have to ditch your sunglasses for your jackets and snow boots.

Although you might be hoping for a smooth transition into a fall and a late start to the snowy season, a long-range winter forecast predicts that the upcoming winter season in Ontario will be anything but stable.

According to the newly-released Farmers' Almanac Winter 2025-2026 Extended Weather Forecast, the forthcoming chilly season is set to bring "traditional winter patterns," including deep freezes, snowfalls and powerful storms.

Farmer's Almanac

While some parts of the country will face dangerous chills and deep freezes, southern Ontario will thankfully experience a bit more variability. Occasional thaws will provide brief periods of relief, although sharp cold snaps will quickly rebound, serving as a reminder that winter is very much here in full force.

The snowiest regions across the country will unfortunately include southern and eastern Ontario, with snowstorms, lake-effect whiteouts and icy conditions persisting throughout the season.

Throughout December, we can expect unsettled weather across the country, including here in Ontario, while January 2026 is shaping up to be a stormy and frigid month. Despite what the groundhog predicts in February, the Farmers' Almanac forecast notes that we'll also see plenty of blizzard conditions throughout the month in Ontario.

"The winter forecast for 2026  paints a picture of  classic Canadian contrasts — deep cold,  heavy snow and  dramatic storms," the forecast reads. "Whether you're  shoveling in Ontario,  braving blizzards in the Prairies or  dodging rainstorms in B.C., this winter will keep Canadians  bundled up and weather-aware."

Still, winter is quite far on the horizon, and we have weeks of warm temperatures to get through before the snowy season makes its arrival.

Fall, however, is just a few weeks away, and if the Farmers' Almanac long-range fall forecast is correct, we can expect things to start on a cool and dry note before conditions grow more unsettled in October.
