Largest U.S.-Canada border crossing inching towards opening in Ontario

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is inching towards a promised but widely scrutinized fall 2025 completion date, soon to introduce the single-largest port of entry on the Canada-U.S. border to the Ontario side of the Detroit River.

The sprawling 2.5-kilometre-long bridge connecting Ontario and Michigan will be home to the biggest and most modern port of entry (POE) out of over 100 such facilities on the Canadian side of the almost 8,900-kilometre U.S.-Canada border.

The new Canadian POE, constructed as part of the $6.4 billion international undertaking, is now practically complete on a 53-hectare/130-acre site in Windsor, Ont.

New photos of the site shared by the bridge team this week show that most work equipment has vacated the facility, and there are few signs of construction remaining.

Despite the impressive progress witnessed in recent months, a recently-unearthed report issued this past spring cast doubts on the bridge's opening timeline, and suggests that the new crossing — including the massive facilities on both sides of the border — may not open until 2026.

Once complete, the new POE will close a key missing link in the international trucking corridor formed by Ontario's Highway 401 and Michigan's I-75.

However, the bridge's intended primary uses serving international trade and tourism are now threatened by a deteriorating political relationship between Canada and the United States.

Continued U.S. economic aggression in the form of tariffs under President Donald Trump, based on unsubstantiated claims of cross-border fentanyl trafficking, has soured a generations-long political and trade relationship — which has, in turn, had an unprecedented impact on tourism and commercial traffic moving across the Canadian border.

Should relations between the two countries not improve drastically in the months to come, the modeling that justified the crossing's $6.4 billion price tag will undoubtedly be thrown into disarray.

Whether or not the new record holder for the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America becomes a boon to international trade or a costly white elephant remains a question only time can answer.
