The Green Jar Shop, founded by sisters Tannis and Mara, has announced that the Toronto sustainability refillery will be closing the doors of its brick-and-mortar location as of August 31.
What started as a dream to reduce single-use plastics and household waste turned into a quaint little shop on St. Clair West that opened during the pandemic. Over the last 5.5 years, The Green Jar Shop has served locals soaps, deodorants, natural sunscreens, dog treats, and so much more.
With the aim of making the city a more sustainable place to live, their products are refillable, and items bought here are package-free.
So, what's next for the business and the sisters?
"We're proud of the momentum we've built together in reducing single-use plastics and household waste. That mission continues as we shift our focus to wholesale partnerships, allowing us to keep providing sustainable products and supporting our community in new ways," the duo posted on the shop's official Instagram page this week.
And although their journey on St. Clair Avenue West comes to a close, they will continue their services online. But even then, Toronto residents are sad to see the physical location close down.
"Ahhh! Will miss your shop, thanks for creating such a cool community space," says one shopper.
Another said, "I recently moved out of Toronto and I’ve really missed your store — I used to be able to walk to it! I'm sad to know you're closing, but excited about this new venture!"
And the comments to their announcement don't stop there: "I always loved stopping in for quick buys and chats, sending lots of love!"
As locals say goodbye to this eco-conscious storefront, the shop's mission will continue through its online presence, one refill at a time
The Green Jar Shop is located at 1061 St. Clair Avenue West.
