Major brand of contact lenses sold across Canada were just recalled

If you wear contacts, you may want to take a closer look, as Health Canada has issued a nationwide recall of a popular contact lens brand.

On June 20, the health department issued a recall of the Acuvue® Oasys Max 1-day Multifocal contact lenses. U.S.-based Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. announced a voluntary recall after it found a high density of microbubbles (microscopic voids within the contact lens) in affected lots.

"Microbubbles will not cause medical harm but may be associated with visual disturbances, particularly in low-light conditions," reads the statement.

The recall has been categorized as a type II recall. According to Health Canada, a type II recall is assigned to a situation where "the use of, or exposure to, a recalled product may cause temporary adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

The announcement didn't specify how many of the affected lots were sold in Canada or if there were any incident reports from consumers.

The recall affects several batches of the Acuvue® Oasys Max 1-day Multifocal contact lenses. To find out if you own the recalled product, check the serial number and model number below:

Canadians who own the affected product are urged to "contact the manufacturer if you require additional information."

Last year, Health Canada recalled the Total1 and Total30 contact lenses due to a "quality issue."
