Toronto is getting a new area code this week

A new area code will be introduced in Toronto this weekend, providing even more much-needed phone numbers for the city's growing population.

On Saturday, April 26, the new "942" code joins the gang of Toronto-area digits of 416, 647, and 437. As decided by the Canadian Radio-televison and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the new code has been added to help ease the demand for more local numbers and will cover the same geographical location as existing Toronto codes.

Initially proposed back in 2024, the 942 has been rolled out gradually, and now residents can request a new number with the updated code.

According to The Canadian Numbering Association, the supply of numbers serviced by the 416, 647, and 437 area codes would run out by mid-2026, thus the addition of the 942 code.

This new introduction doesn't impact existing numbers or local calls or emergency services, while any other three-digit area code services will continue to operate as normal.

So if you see a 942 number pop up on your phone, you're getting a local call! Welcome to Toronto, 942.
