Canada just got a new coin weighing 10 kg

Tend to walk around with a pocket of loose change? Royal Canadian Mint's hefty new coin will have you rethinking the size of your pockets.

The Big Silver Maple Leaf is the latest release featuring the iconic Canadian symbol.

With a face value of $1,000 and weighing in at 10 kg, this is one coin you're not likely to carry with you on a coffee run.

According to Statistics Canada, the mean birthweight in the country is 3.36 kg, meaning the coin is barely shy of weighing as much as three Canadian infants (10.08 kg).

"Aptly named and exquisitely crafted in 99.99 per cent pure silver, the Big Silver Maple Leaf is an outsized tribute to one of the world’s most sought-after silver bullion coins," reads the site.

"This exceptional piece's $1,000 face value makes it the world's highest denomination 10-kilogram silver coin, while its 230-millimetre diameter makes it the largest 99.99 per cent pure silver maple leaf coin in the world."

This Canada-made collector's item is a rare one, with only 299 coins existing worldwide.

But that rarity comes at a price, and each can be purchased for an astounding $24,999.95. If the price tag is a little too steep, the Mint offers a six-month payment plan for $4,166.66 per month. You'll then receive your order once payment is complete.

While the reverse features a detailed maple leaf design by artist Walter Ott, the obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

The coin's packaging is equally impressive.

It's presented in a removable tray inside a wooden cabinet-style case. The box contains a drawer with a hardcover detailing the story of the silver maple leaf. Of course, it also comes with a pair of cotton gloves because you can never be too careful when handling a coin that retails for $24,999.95.

You can purchase the coin on the Mint's website, but it's not expected to ship until November 12.
