I Am A Cake
I Am A Cake is a Korean dessert cafe that offers madeleines, matcha and more.
Housed in a soothing butter-yellow building, I Am A Cake is the newest addition to Moss Park's growing collection of cafes.
The cafe, which first opened its doors in February 2026, is one of two locations to bear the name. The other is located in Markham and has been open since October 2024.
Both locations are owned and operated by Amy Seo, a pastry chef who got her start baking for her family and friends.
Amy explains that the concept for her business grew out of a desire to make people smile.
Furthermore, the business's name and branding were chosen specifically to convey that desire to the public: if you take on the identity of a cake, Amy reasons, then you become a symbol of joy and happiness.
Though both stores offer a similar selection of products, I Am A Cake's Markham location is takeout only, with no dining space.
The downtown location, on the other hand, features a full dining room, decorated with toys, trinkets and other fanciful touches.
The mango matcha cream latte ($7) is a vibrantly coloured beverage whose name speaks for itself.
Finely ground green tea is mixed with mango puree, then poured over ice. The final touch is a dollop of cream, which gives the drink its signature foamy texture.
The caramel cream latte ($6) possesses a similar creamy consistency, though the flavours couldn't be more different.
While the matcha latte was bright and slightly bitter, with notes of tangy, tropical sweetness, the caramel latte is darker and richer, thanks to a liberal amount of espresso.
The Golden Bloom ($6.35) is a cold, hibiscus-based drink, infused with mango, orange and peach juice and garnished with an orange slice.
Victoria cake ($9.50 / slice) is one of the cafe's most popular desserts. Layers of fluffy poundcake are held together with tart raspberry jam, then topped with smooth, sugary buttercream.
Each slice is garnished with a ripe strawberry, which complements the cake's natural sweetness.
Chestnut cheesecake ($9.50 / slice) consists of soft cheesecake, buried under a thick layer of milk cream. A roasted chestnut rests on top, enhancing the cake's earthy, nutty flavour.
Scones ($6.50 each) are fist-sized lumps of dough, baked to golden perfection. The caramel scone comes topped with ooey-gooey caramel sauce and a cube of salted butter.
The Victoria scone, meanwhile, makes use of the same ingredients as the Victoria cake. Both types of scone are sweet and buttery, but in a way that doesn't feel excessive or overwhelming.
Cream madeleines ($4.75 each) are a unique variation on a classic French pastry. While most madeleines are soft and spongy, this version is filled with sweet cream, taking the texture to a whole other level.
Of the six flavours currently on offer, the ones that stood out to me the most were the custard and mugwort flavours.
The custard flavour was rich and creamy, while the mugwort flavour had a fragrant, almost floral aroma that kept me coming back for more.
Financiers ($4.75 each) are small, rectangular pastries made from butter and almond flour.
Other ingredients, such as Earl Grey and Lotus Biscoff, are added to give the cakes their own unique identities.
My personal favourite was the matcha chocolate flavour, which strikes the right balance between bitter and sweet.
I Am A Cake is located at 67 Shuter Street.
