John Pinette Toronto

This Week In Comedy: Jane Godley, John Pinette, Big City Improv Festival, Kathleen Phillips, James Hartnett

We're spoiled. There's no other way to describe how lucky we are. It's just...if you knew what I knew, you'd do what I do. Follow me as I walk you through a comedy wonderland...

WED OCT 10 - SUN OCT 14 / JANE GODLEY / YUK YUK'S / 224 RICHMOND W / 8PM / $11-20

I loved Snatch and Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels, but my ex would never watch them with me because she couldn't understand what they were saying, even though she was educated in the British school system. Now, I'm not sure if you have trouble with Scottish accents, but if you do, I feel sorry for you. Not only is Jane's comedy hilarious, but it's her. I don't know anything about being a mum from Scotland, but her act compels you to enter her world, which is damn hard to do when you're expected to get a laugh every 8-12 seconds on BBC.

THURS OCT 11 / JOHN PINETTE / MASSEY HALL / 178 VICTORIA / 730PM / $51-61

Given John's frame, you might expect him to serve up a standard helping of fat jokes. Happen not gonna. In my opinion, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more creatively written act. Whenever I see John, the audience member in me wants to laugh while the comedian in me wants to take notes. Oh yeah, and he was selected to tour with Frank freakin' Sinatra. Wowzers.

FRI OCT 12 - SAT OCT 20 / BIG CITY IMPROV FESTIVAL / COMEDY BAR / FESTIVAL PASSES FROM $35-60

The Big City Improv Festival picks up where Just For Laughs 42 left off, showcasing the talent of 75 acts over the course of 8 days. Similar to JFL42, you have the option to purchase a Festival Pass which will allow you to attend as many shows as you like. Big name stars like Colin Mochrie (Who`s Line Is It Anyway?), Paul Brittain (SNL), Jet Eveleth (Ted & Melanie), Steve Little (Eastbound & Down), and Jerry Minor (SNL, Lucky Louie) will create moments that will never happen again, which is always the best and at the same time most bittersweet part about improv. You can tell your friends about it, but they'll never see exactly what you saw. C'est sigh...

SAT OCT 13 / KATHLEEN PHILLIPS & JAMES HARTNETT / FLYING BEAVER PUBARET / 488 PARLIAMENT / $10 ADV $15 DOOR

How do I say this...this pairing would have rivalled any of the shows put on at Just For Laughs. That's how good Kathleen and James are. In case you think I'm going a bit overboard, Kathleen was voted Best Character Comic two years running by Now! Magazine and James Hartnett has had his videos featured at JFL and the Worldwide Short Film Fest. Go...just go. It's unbelievable how lucky we are to have talent like this walking among us.
