Flagship Pistachio location to close this weekend

Posted by Robyn Urback / May 10, 2012

Pistachio torontoFirst fell Pistachio Yorkdale back in 2010, and it looks like the flagship Yonge and Eglinton location will soon follow suit.

The eco-friendly gift and stationary boutique will close its doors this weekend after about four years in operation, leaving us non-privy observers scratching our heads. While "green" products could arguably still be considered niche, Pistachio had the financial backing and business savvy of one, Indigo CEO Heather Reisman.

And yes, it probably would have had more of a following on Roncey or on the Danforth, but I would think some midtowners surely care about staple-less staplers and organic hair texturizer!?

If so, it's back down to Roncey for them, starting next week.

It always comes down to supply and demand, doesn't it? I live in the area and I've been in the store a couple of times to look for gifts and I've always left with the same thought - the prices are ridiculous! Some cool products but maybe if they weren't outrageously priced they would have done better

I agree - I always went in, with the intention of buying, but just couldn't bring myself to pay such a premium on items I can find elsewhere for a lower price. Too, bad - it was a beautiful store.

Oh puh-leeze. Heather only started this concept to jump on the ecobandwagon and pulled some very talented staff off of the Chapters/Indigo business and her greed cost them their jobs.

Stupid Heather.

I run Vortex Records at Yonge and Eg and it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that Pistachio is closing. The shop ain't tiny and the rent in this area is absolutely absurd. I can't imagine the amount of stuff they have to sell just to break even. Toronto commercial landlords need a wake up call.

Awww! This saddens me! I used to work at Yonge & Eg and I have been to this store lots of times. Never actually brought myself to actually BUYING something because it was just sooooo expensive that I always ended up finding a better deal somewhere else..

I hope they have a massive blowout sale tho!!!!

Good riddance! There is absolutely nothing "eco" about a store dedicated to pointless consumer goods.

Agree with Lincoln. I live in the area too and I have always wondered how on earth a place like that can afford the rent. I hope a restaurant takes its place :))))

...like, a good restaurant. Not another burger/bbq/grilled cheese/froyo joint.
