Le Bar A Soupe, Cartel and Fresh @ The Beach Do Deadpool
Thanksgiving weekend has brought with it a fresh round of Deadpool sightings. On Ossington, Le Bar A Soupe has closed after warming west-enders' stomachs with homemade goodness for the past few years. As far as I can recall, this is the first of the newer businesses on Lower Ossington that have closed since the street began to boom earlier this decade.
Near Queen and Bathurst, Cartel has closed after little more than a year in business. I guess the streetwear boutique just couldn't sell enough pricey tees, jeans and sweatshirts to pay the rent at this part of town. A note on the door lets customers know they can find similar brands for sale at Identity at 1735 Queen St. East.
Speaking of Queen East, brunch hangout Fresh @ The Beach is no more. I never had the pleasure of eating here but apparently their all day breakfasts were one of the better ones in the area.

The Fresh@ signs are terrible! As for being one of the best breakkie joints in the nabe, how hard its it to cook eggs?
The fresh wasn't that great. I had breakfast there once.. never to return.. its way better at the Tulip and worth the extra time to go west to Coxwell.
Bar a soup was good when it opened cos there was nothing else - but as soon as ohter options appeared, they were lessappealing. Their soups were very oily and vegetable soups not pureed but broth based. All of her soups tasted the same, and then she got stingy with the bread and butter too.
Fresh, while the signs where blindingly hideous, the tables were large, the chairs were comfy, and the breakfast was pretty darn good and cheap. Free Range eggs!!! I have to agree that the tulip is fantastic, and is on the top of our current list of favorite cheep breakfast stops, but Fresh was good, and were sad to see it go.
The problem with Bar à soupe is that they closed early, and Ossington isn't much of daytime destination.
another deadpool citizen is The Red Lion Pub on Jarvis just south of Gloucester, as of 2-3 wks ago. too bad...kind of run down, but the beer was good, service friendly, and a nice quiet place to ponder.
Le Bar A Soupe closed early, opened late, some days didn't open at all, and served mediocre soup. The place is only open for lunch, we'd go there at noon and... not open yet. Not particularly surprising that it isn't around anymore.
Business 101: You have to be open in order to make money.
Business 102: You also have to have a good product.
I think that is the soup place that closed down for like 3 weeks in the summer too so they could go on holiday to France. Didn't seem like they were that serious about making money.
Oh, I didn't know the Red Lion had gone under... all I know is the last two times I went there, I was told the kitchen had closed for the night so I immediately departed :-/.
Does anyone know what happened to Get Real Cafe, also located on Ossington? There was a slightly cryptic sign on the door when I passed by there at the weekend. In addition, their website is now down and their phone number is no longer in service.
