UKULA Enters the Deadpool

Posted by Tim / November 1, 2008

UKULAUKULA was one of my favourite stores AND cafes on College Street. They had a sweet cafe and chill out space, and a good selection of guy's and women's clothing; plus a magazine, web site, good tunes and the whole DJ culture going on (the founders spun at Andy Poolhall across the street).

But sadly, the store is no longer and has entered the blogTO Deadpool. Thanks to Jason Moore for the tip. He's posted photos of the note on the door and the empty shop on Flickr.

A great addition to these stories that would make it more interesting would be if you guys could get a few quotes from the owners/workers of the places that close down about what went wrong and such. I understand they might not wanna talk, but it'd be great to have that sorta thing waiting after the fold if they were willing to.

How about a google-style map colour coded with little tombstones?
i.e. rd for restaurant, blue for store, etc etc.
It would show what neighbourhoods have rising/sinking business...

What was the name of the restaurant that was in Ukula's space before that awful red place? Began with an F? Ahhhh I can't remember.

The cyclical failure of any restaurant that sets up at 448 (or is it 484?) Bloor is worthy of an article. Labios most recently, a Korean place before that, a McDonald's before that... All in 4 years.

Sounds like a great shop, unfortunately I never heard of it until now. Maybe they should have tried advertising????

I remember the first time I went there... I almost cried with happiness when I realized they served coffee too!

Shame.

That "awfull red place" was called AIRPORT LOUNGE which had some of the best sushi in town as well it was chosen by the glob and mail newspaper to represent Toronto in a cross Canada restaurant design feature the blond haired guy that owns Andy Poolhall designed it and opened it as a hobby did really well for 3 years until the same sort of Landlord dispute UKULA went through caused it to close

I know the people from Ukula, they told me they moved out because they wanted to take their magazine to the UK and didnt want to run a retail business anymore. they took over the lease from the guy from andy pool hall
