Diplo impressed by Toronto Eaton Centre but then had embarrassing moment in mall

Famed DJ and music producer Diplo recently took a shopping trip to Toronto's Eaton Centre, and while he seemed pretty impressed by the iconic mall, the same can't exactly be said about his reception from shoppers.

As Diplo strolled through the Eaton Centre, he took note of the "really nice mall," remarking that the 1977-opened shopping centre must be "new."

Casually chatting with his photographer, the man behind the camera pointed out two seemingly random men sitting on a nearby bench and said, "Go back to them… autograph."

Without a second thought,  Diplo walked over and signed a booklet that one of the men was reading, but the man quickly snapped it shut and shot him a quizzical look. Embarrassed, the humbled celebrity turned back to the camera, shrugged, and said, "No autograph."

Calling it an experience "he will never recover from," the musician carried on, if not feeling a little snubbed by the clever prank pulled off by his photographer. Diplo captioned the TikTok clip "I am firing my photographer for this…" in response to the obvious set-up.

But, it's safe to say that this one shopper's reaction wasn't a reflection of Diplo's fan base in Toronto.

Fans flooded the comments section asking why Diplo was in the city and when he would be performing next in town. Though Diplo doesn't have any upcoming dates in Toronto, the star was in London, Ont., this week, performing at BCKYRD London electronic music festival, which took place on Sept. 19 and 20.

Diplo last performed in Toronto in September 2024, at a free show at Paris Texas.
